RTX 3080 Ti benchmark. You can't forbid living beautifully

Let's face it: the RTX 3080 Ti test in the editorial office has turned into a kind of game "Think of a funnier name." Indeed, today, in June 2021, it is impossible to seriously talk about the advantages of a particular video card. The prices are so wild that the total cost of the RTX 3080, 3080 Ti, and 3090 ordered for review exceeded one million rubles: more than 300,000 for one video card. And this is not normal.
Therefore, a big request to all of you: do not take this text as a recommendation for the purchase or as material from the category of "what is better, what is worse and what to take in the end." This is just a review of NVIDIA's new chip in which we'll show you how good or bad the RTX 3080 Ti is.

Completion and appearance

We received the card from NVIDIA, which means that we will deal with the Founder's EditionThose who have seen the RTX 3080 or 3090 already know what it looks like: a beautiful package made of thick black cardboard, inside which on a pedestal of foamed polyethylene lies the card itself. At the same time, the package bundle is modest: several instructions and an adapter from two 8-pin plugs from the power supply to a new 12-pin connector. True, even this small set is made and packaged in such a way that you get the feeling of an “expensive purchase”: the instructions are printed on high-quality glossy paper, and the box with the complete set is perfectly fitted to all sizes and fits snugly in a compartment specially molded for it.

The card itself is an exact copy of the RTX 3080. It is a very short PCB. From below it is covered with a metal plate, and from above - by a radiator of complex shape. As before, there are 90mm fans on both sides of the video card. At the same time, both the backlighting of the GeForce RTX inscription on the right side and the X-shaped strip on the backside (from the one that looks up in the case) have been preserved. The connectors are the same: this is a 12-pin power connector on the right side approximately in the center, three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, and one HDMI 2.1.

Chip

With the chip, the situation is exactly the same as the history of the previous generation. In fact, the 3080 Ti is a very slightly stripped-down RTX 3090 with half the amount of memory. Yes, this is the same GDDR6x with an effective frequency of 19 GHz and a bus width of 384 bits, but it is no longer 24, but 12 GB. At the same time, the processor losses were kept within only 2.5%. The card has lost two SM units, which means that it has 10 240 CUDA cores instead of 10 496, 320 texture units instead of 328, and 80 RT cores versus 82. With such an architecture, these losses are meager. But in comparison with the usual 3080, the Ti version added hoo: 17%. If we go even deeper into the past and remember the RTX 2080 Ti, then the increase in CUDA cores there was generally 132%. Here, however, it is worth mentioning that the architecture of Ampere is so different from Turing that such figures should be given only for beauty.
Here we add that, like other NVIDIA chips, the card supports all current technologies, including ray tracing, DLSS, Studio drivers, and Reflex, which we talked about in detail in the RTX 3060 Ti review.

The new Ti consumes decently. 350 W is officially announced, and monitoring systems show that this figure is quite real. In Metro Exodus EE, the card quietly takes 317 watts. Surprisingly, the cooling system feels absolutely normal: even with such a wild TDP, the card in an open stand produces only 37 dB, which is usually described as "a slightly muffled conversation of people." However, if necessary, you can unscrew the turntables by 100% and remove all 53 dB, but we do not know why this is needed under normal conditions.
Even in auto mode (at about 35-40% of the fan speed), the temperature of the chip never rose above 76 ° C. We are sure that NVIDIA partners in the face of ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte in the ROG series will lower this indicator to 65 degrees and raise the frequencies in the ROG series with the same input. In the FE version, the chip, as a rule, does not rise above 1980 MHz, and with a long and intensive load, it reduces the frequency to 1750-1800 MHz. By the way, we note that for the 3080 Ti NVIDIA has slightly changed the principle of working with fans. At 3090 they stopped at a temperature on the chip of 50 ° C, at 3080 Ti the turntables stand even at 55-56 ° C.

Performance

Now about the most important thing. What can this card do? If we consider the situation in a vacuum, then, of course, we are talking about the coveted 4K gaming. Assassin's Creed ValhallaWatch Dogs: Legion, Metro: Exodus, Total War: Three Kingdoms - all of them, without ray tracing, produce the desired 55-60 frames per second without noticeable drawdowns of 0.1%. In simpler projects - F1 2020Call of Duty: Warzone - the counter flies away in 100, 150, and even 180 fps.
But pure 4K ray tracing is lame. No, you can play, of course: in Watch Dogs: Legion we are talking about 50 fps, and in Metro: Exodus EE - about 36. But, let's be honest, without DLSS beams in 4K are not exported to modern video cards. But with upscaling it turns out well. Metro rises to 70 frames, and Watch Dogs oversteps the mark at 80. At the same time, the difference in quality is really almost imperceptible. “Almost” means that we cannot find jambs in the image, even though we know about DLSS turned on. As for other resolutions, then DLSS should be used only if the nosebleeds are needed for 144, 240, or 360 frames for the corresponding monitors. Because already in QHD, even with ray tracing enabled, the results do not fall below 65 frames.
Unfortunately, in the real world - among the competitors - the Ti doesn't look so bright anymore. The difference between 3080 and 3090 was already only 10–11%, and it is very difficult to stand out from the 3080 Ti stuck between them. Formally, it is, of course, closer to 3090 and lags behind it by only 3-4%. But at the same time, it breaks away from the usual 3080 by about the same percentage.

Of course, the price of the Ti version could have had its say. In a world without mining, the loss of 12 GB could turn the novelty into a very lucrative offer (almost minus 16,000 rubles from 3,090). But today, when each card from the triplet costs more than 300,000 rubles, the difference in price tags does not affect anything at all.
Let's say a few words about mining. At the time of testing, the RTX 3080 Ti was severely cut on this point. In ETH mining, it showed only 57 MH / s - 33% less than RTX 3080. Perhaps this will somehow cool the ardor of miners, but remembering how quickly the similar protection on the RTX 3060 was broken, we strongly doubt it.
