KING OF SEAS: REVIEW

“Corsairs” are still loved here in Russia. And some even try to resurrect themTherefore, all pirate-themed projects automatically fall into the area of increased attention. It happened with the  King of Seas... True, the brainchild of 3DClouds and  Team17 does not look like  Corsairs, but like the game that inspired their authors - Sid Meier's Pirates!

Eh, my life ... pirate

The heroine of the King of Seas named Marylou (I chose her at the start) did not become a pirate of her own free will. Her father, the king, fell victim to an insidious conspiracy, in which the daughter was accused. Yes, not just accused, but immediately let her ship sink. According to all the laws of the genre, she was saved at the last moment - just by the pirates, with the help of which the girl, who was groomed and came to her senses in a remote lair, is now trying to find out the whole truth, restore justice and return what was taken from her and her family.

Now she has to deal with these types.
Now she has to deal with these types.

First, of course, they give her a seedy boat, explain the basics of who is here, what and what, how the pirate life works. Then they are sent to sink several merchant ships, necessarily far from the ports (pirates, after all), then - to find out what is going on in the royal domain, what else are the conspirators who killed her father up to. You have to take the whiskey to the innkeeper to share information and hunt for the advanced ship of the royal officer to steal his documents. Then - to work for the governor of Tortuga.

As a result, the conspirators are surprised to learn that Marylou is alive, and begin to hunt for her. And by this time we will finally unlock other, more powerful ships for purchase - flutes, brigs, galleons, and frigates.

Sinking the Royal Officer's ship is not easy.

Thickness matters. And the magic

As expected, ships differ in hull thickness, capacity, speed, and the number of places for guns. In addition, we can equip them with more and more cool equipment, which we find, receive as rewards or buy from the shipyards in the settlements.

Galleon is every pirate's dream.
Galleon is every pirate's dream.

For example, it is allowed to put new sails, which accelerate the ship faster; guns that shoot more powerful; cores that do more damage, and even add some kind of effect from poison or curse. Plus, the hull, which is better protected, intervenes more team members and makes them more tenacious. You can change the team itself to a more skillful one.

"Blue" equipment is not yet the best - there is also "purple".

In addition, it is allowed to equip the ship with special abilities. For example, we turn on the magic afterburner to quickly get away from the pursuit, shoot fireballs at opponents, call a huge shark on them, or beat the tentacles of a sea monster. However, they can do the same with us - some parts of the ship's equipment have a magic defense parameter.

Here the enemy himself set a magical ghost ship on us.

Errand pirate

How do we earn all this equipment, funds for it and for new ships? It's a classic Sid Meier's Pirates schemeMeryl's ship rushes between the islands, performs main and side missions (the latter are incomparably more), trades, profiting from the difference in prices (somewhere it is more profitable to buy wood, and sell rum, and vice versa), sinks other ships. And it doesn't matter which ones - they are allowed to attack the military, commercial, and tourist. The main thing is to do it away from ports and forts, which immediately begin to fire at us very painfully.

Many mouth-watering merchant and tourist boats are escorted.
Many mouth-watering merchant and tourist boats are escorted.

You can also catch cargo directly from the sea and pick up treasures on the islands, marked with the cherished cross (though first, you have to pay a good deal to the cartographer).

Somewhere even fish is allowed to be caught, but if there is an experienced fisherman in the team.

The main source of loot is quests. The secondary ones are divided into types and are regularly repeated - deliver the cargo to the same cartographer; bring chicken legs to the unlucky boyfriend so that he can cook something like that for his beloved; find another gourmet 26 pelican eggs; sink three warships or two merchant ships. In general, you get the point. Some errands are really funny, but repetitions spoil the first impression.

On the other hand, this is an action / RPG about pirates, quite arcade and easy, and not a corsair simulator. Such quests give the main thing - the ability to pump and earn money for new equipment.

On the frailty of a pirate life

The arcade nature of King of Seas manifests itself in other ways as well. There is no need to pay a salary to the team or to feed/drink it. You can crash a ship into an island, into another ship, get damaged, lose part of the team, then stop and immediately fix it with the help of repair kits. And we are restoring the size of the team by catching drowning people from the sea. At the same time, the most difficult and unpleasant thing at times is to slow down just in time and not crash into something: there are problems with the inertia of physics.

Repeatedly my ship went to the bottom due to unsuccessful maneuvers. But every time after that, reviving in the pirate's lair, we lose most of the skills and cool equipment. The only salvation is to deposit one or another piece of equipment in banks in advance.

Every time after the revival, something randomly changes - a set of quests on the islands, the composition of ships on the horizon, and the range of equipment at the shipyards. And the most annoying thing is that now you don't find such a convenient fireball in the same store, which is so pleasant to fire at enemies from a distance. In this sense, randomness can surprise you both pleasantly and not very much.
The main thing is that the fiery projectile is homing.
The main thing is that the fiery projectile is homing.

On the other hand, you can't call King of Seas an arcade at allHere, for example, you need to take into account the direction of the wind to move faster. In battles, you can change the type of ammunition - there are nipples, heavy cannonballs, and shrapnel. Therefore, it is important to react in time to the situation in battle and to maneuver competently, turning the necessary side to the enemy and not allowing himself to be targeted. Yes, the controls are not the most convenient, but together with magical skills, quite interesting tactical dances are obtained - each victory over a strong rival brings genuine pleasure.

Often we are also attacked by sea monsters, which work here as typical traps.

Another danger is storms that wreak havoc on the ship and crew.

It is clear that the King of Seas to the Corsairs and Sid Meier's Pirates! as far as I am from Peter to the Caribbean. Yes, the authors did not particularly strive - they made an easy, unobtrusive arcade game on a pirate theme, which is focused on pumping. And most importantly, it conveys the bravura spirit of a pirate feast and romance - now there are not many such games, while someone is going to resurrect something. Fans of sea adventures can try King of Seas without fishThey will not be delighted, but they will not choke either.

Pros: An interesting, truly pirate story; classic gameplay from  Sid Meier's Pirates! multiplied by reinforced action / RPG elements is capable of captivating; an abundance of quests and equipment of varying degrees of rarity; in places, it is funny; nice picture; high-quality sound and relevant music.

Cons: side quests are repeated regularly; the gameplay is classic, but the depths of "Pirates!" he certainly lacks; the ship is not very responsive - it often crashes into objects or gets stuck in them.
