Battlefield 2042: release date, gameplay, new features, what to expect?

Battlefield 2042: DICE and EA have finally lifted the veil on Battlefield 2042, the next installment in the franchise. It will be a huge sandbox game, exclusively multiplayer and set shortly, post-apocalyptic. The first trailer will have given us mouth-watering… Release date, gameplay, new features, we tell you all about it.

“ As the world is on the verge of war, the greatest crisis in human history is causing a new breed of stateless soldiers to emerge. How did we get here ? ". No more rumors around the one we called "Battlefield 6" or "Battlefield 2021"! DICE and EA have finally lifted the veil on the next installment in the franchise, which will ultimately be called  Battlefield 2042.

Developed "on a scale never seen before", EA and DICE's next war game will be set shortly and ravaged by climatic disasters that will have led to the worst refugee crisis in the history of the United States. humanity. The people who have been displaced are called the Non-Patriated or No-Pats and the soldiers among them are recruited to fight in a world war waged by - surprise, surprise - the United States and Russia. Release date, gameplay, new features, we tell you while waiting for the official release of Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042: when to release?

Officially unveiled on June 9, 2021, Battlefield 2042  will be released on October 22, 2021.

Battlefield 2042: Like films and series, let us not forget, however, that video games are also particularly affected by the health crisis. Delays are always to be expected, given that a few teams are still teleworking. So the Battlefield 2042 release date could be pushed back to early 2022. Hopefully, that's not the case. We will update this file as soon as we have more information.

Battlefield 2042: on PC, next-gen but also old-gen

Battlefield 2042 released on PC (Origin, Steam, Epic Games Store, EA Play Pro) PlayStation 5,  Xbox Series X, and Xbox S Series. But also on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Several concurring sources had said that a separate part of the studio was indeed working on older consoles and gamers " shouldn't worry ." Everyone obviously had the Cyberpunk 2077 shipwreck on PS4 and Xbox One in mind. It is therefore officially confirmed, Battlefield 2042 will indeed be released on Xbox One and PS4.

In contrast, the game will support matches for up to 128 players on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5. On Xbox One and PS4, rounds will be limited to 64 players and cards will be reduced a bit. Otherwise, updates and gameplay will be the same across all platforms, although DICE has yet to confirm cross-gen in-game capabilities.

Battlefield 2042: A Post-Apocalyptic Context of Modern Warfare

Battlefield 2042: As was expected,  Battlefield 2042  will be set in the modern era. We must therefore totally forget the First and the Second World Wars. The context of total war had been mentioned many times, notably with the hypothetical context of World War III, in the midst of the conflict between the UN and Russia. Rumors again confirmed during its official presentation on June 9.

The new Battlefield will therefore take place in 2042, or about twenty years in the future. The United States and Russia are at the heart of the new history and pulling the strings of these new proxy clashes. A kind of cold war, therefore, in a futuristic context. But no context of all-out war as the rumors indicated.

“ It only took ten years for the world to come to the brink of chaos. Rising sea levels, collapsing economies, breaches of alliances, and other disasters are occurring all over the planet. An unpredictable space debris storm causes Kessler syndrome. More than 70% of the satellites in orbit are affected and crash into Earth. The cause of this tragedy is unknown, and the world on the brink of the abyss takes the plunge. No more internet. No more navigation. No more surveillance. No more weather forecasts. "

The game will thus take place in a dark and pessimistic universe, almost dystopian or even catastrophic, where a succession of migratory crises have caused the bankruptcy of many States. Due to global warming, several countries around the world have collapsed, leaving much of the Earth's population stateless. Naturally, the stateless (the Homeless) formed armies of elite mercenaries who now fight on behalf of the United States and Russia or sometimes for themselves. All of this will be explored through the seasonal updates.

Battlefield 2042: how will the graphics be?

Battlefield 2042 will use the fourth version of the Frostbite Engine. We must therefore expect graphics more or less similar to those of Battlefield V and Star Wars: Battlefront II, with, all the same, some improvements.

We can imagine better lighting effects, better management of ray tracing, the arrival of DLSS 2.0, etc. Of course, anything is possible. Hopefully, the two studios surprise us at this level.

Battlefield 2042: a dynamic environment, climatic events, and in-game maps

Battlefield 2042 has the largest environments in franchise history, including maps in South Korea, Singapore, Egypt, Qatar, Antarctica. The cards in the game will benefit from all the possibilities offered by the latest Frostbite graphics engine. Land and buildings will be almost completely destructible.

Big news, climatic events may change the course of the game, including tornadoes or sandstorms. All this creating a fully dynamic environment. The maps will also be scaled, with land, air, and sea spaces enlarged to reinforce the feeling of all-out war.

Here are the seven All-Out Warfare maps that will be available at the launch of Battlefield 2042, according to EA:

  • Kaleidoscope in South Korea, an urban map where forces here will battle it out to control a quantum-energy disinformation hub after an attack threatens the global grid.
  • Manifesto in Singapore, with close combat in the docks.
  • Orbital in French Guinea, a medium-sized space research area, where a rocket will be preparing to take off.
  • Landfill in India, a sort of giant shipyard.
  • Renewal in Egypt, an agricultural area.
  • Hourglass in Qatar, a city buried under the sand.
  • Breaking into Antarctica, in the mountains with the largest map in the game of 5.9 square km.

Finally and according to Tom Henderson, the game will include a mode called Battlefield Hub. This will allow, among other things, to replay old maps of the franchise, revisited and remodeled for the occasion.

Battlefield 2042: multiplayer exclusively, no Battle Royale, two new game modes, Fortnite-style storytelling seasons

Unlike other games in the franchise, Battlefield 2042 will not have a single-player campaign or Battle Royale mode. EA and DICE insisted strongly on this point during the press conference on June 9. It will be a primarily multiplayer game service with many updates spread over several months. On the other hand, there are three game modes :

  • All-Out War: A mode that includes the traditional Conquests mode and Rush mode.
  • Risk zone: a mode focused on squad play, close to the game Escape from Tarkov.
  • A third game mode is called Confidential. This mode is still a mystery. It is specifically developed by DICE Los Angeles and franchise veterans.

In addition, it will be possible to play against bots (AIs) to train and test the equipment. Scripted seasons are planned every three months. We must therefore expect in-game events to modify certain aspects of the maps or gameplay, like Fortnite.

Battlefield 2042: How many players at most?

The game will support matches of up to 128 players on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5. On Xbox One and PS4, rounds will be limited to 64 players and cards will be reduced a bit. EA should provide more detail over time.

On the other hand, the standard game modes, in 32 against 32 - 64 players - will always be available, and for once, on all platforms. Andrew Wilson had referred to a scale " never seen before " and battles "  more massive and immersive " than in the past.

Battlefield 2042: which classes will be playable?

Battlefield 2042 introduces a new approach to classes. There will be ten unique specialists in the game, each with distinct weapons and abilities, but also possibilities for customization. Indeed, in Battlefield 2042 you will have to find your role on the battlefield and form personalized squads thanks to the new Specialist system.

Drawing inspiration from the four classes in Battlefield, Specialists all have a unique specialty and attribute, but the rest of the gear is fully editable. There are four specialists confirmed to date:

  • Recognition
  • Assault
  • Support
  • Engineer

EA and DICE have announced that more Specialists will be introduced between now and the game's release. New ones will also be arriving regularly.

Finally, you can call on the Ranger, a robotic dog designed for combat. You can revive squad members from a distance with the syrette gun, use a grappling hook to reach new heights, equip yourself with a wingsuit or even deploy a reconnaissance drone.

Will there be a Battlefield 2042 beta?

Yes, a limited number of Battlefield veterans will be able to participate in a tech test in early July 2021. It will not be a closed alpha similar to previous Battlefields. The technical test will be done in a closed box in a gray box and participants will be subject to a confidentiality agreement. Find more information on the technical test page.
