Bunin Sergey Georgievich (Member of the Expert Council)

Bunin Sergey Georgievich

Sergei Bunin ranks high as scientist and researcher pursuing the theory and practice of information and computer networks, particularly with application of radio channels for data transmission. The first broadband network with batch commutation “Discret” based on cell architecture was developed in the USSR under his direction. The “Discret” network allows to integrate arbitrarily located user groups in clusters (cells) within the territories covered by retransmitters and provide cells' interaction without engaging additional communication resources. As against known analogs such networks provide maximal bandwidth amounting to the value of 0,95 of a potential bandwidth.

He is aso the author of a set of highly efficient protocols for multiple access to the communication channel resolving the problem of increasing the networks bandwidth while reducing the transmission time/ That was critical for batch commutation satellite channels. The first batch commutation satellite information and computer network in the USSR was based on Bunin’s works and developed with his direct participation. It provided services for prospecting expeditions of the Ministry of Geology of the RSFSR (the GEOS system). The space section of the network exploits low-altitude satellites. The efficiency of such satellites was demonstrated by Bunin in 1985 – long before the development of such projects abroad.

In 1989 he obtained his Ph.D.”Methods and means of  construction of massive information and computer network based on radio channels.”

Bunin’s works are also known in application of complicated and non-sinusoidal signals in radio communication and computer engineering which allow to significantly increase the bandwidth of broadcast, extend the gating methods, construct computer transmitters and receivers based on digital technology, and solve the problem of wireless commutation and connections in computer engineering when the high level of impulse noise constrains the exploitation of classical sinusoidal signals. He also developed a set of devices for transmitting and receiving noise-like signals which allow to increase the data transmission speed while providing high security and simplifying the transceiver equipment.

In due time the results of S.G.Bunin's scientific activity found application in the construction of the batch commutation global integral maintenance network based on low-orbital Earth satellites - LEOPACK. This project was reported during the 48th International Congress of Astronautics in October 1997 and was recognized the vanguard design of satellite communication systems for multimedia information transmission. He also proposed the original idea of the ground-based batch commutation cell networks of integral maintenance. Batch commutation cell networks allow to organize the integral (multimedia) traffic transfer with substantially smaller investments in comparison with cell telephone networks with channels commutation.

The abovementioned ideas were reported to scientists and specialists in communication sphere; Space-Tel company in Beirut; Lebanon; University of Paris; and to France Telecom in France; Alenia company in Italy; Hughes Aircraft company and Motorola in the USA; British Telecom and Lloyd in Great Britain; Etisalat in United Arab Emirates and others. The estimation of the projects by all above firms and organizations unambiguously emphasized their world level.

Developments of Sergei Bunin in theory as well as in practice found their implication in the Comprehensive Program for Creation of The United National Communication System, where the following projects were accepted:
• Radiotelephone network with decentralized batch commutation on the basis of satellite radio channels
• Radiotelephone network with batch commutation
• Cell networks with batch commutation

S.G. Bunin published more than 140 scientific works, among them 4 monographs and 12 certificates of authorship. He repeatedly made a report at the international and inner-union conferences.  His monograph "Computational Networks With Batch Radio Communication" is widely known as being the first the most complete work in this sphere in the USSR. Moreover, he is the author of more than hundred popular science articles and books published in the "Radio" journal and by Union and republic publishing houses. There are well known his books as "Engineering of Amateur Singlesideband Radio Communication", which was issued several times, "The Reference Book for Short-Wave Enthusiast ", that published in edition of more than 320 thousand copies.  These books became the reference literature not only for wireless enthusiasts, but also for radio specialists since they contained the foremost scientific and technical ideas in the field of radio communication.

S.G.Bunin was elected as the academician of the Academy of telecommunications and as the academician of the Academy of Engineering of the Ukraine. He also was the President of the Association of Developers, Producers and Users of The Radio Computer Networks "ASTRA"; the member of the editorial board of the "Radioamator" journal; member of the Scientific Council of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the problem of "information-computing networks".

He was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in science and technology in 2004. He is also the recipient of Lebedev reward of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for the highest achievements in the field of cybernetics. He has 2 gold medals of VDNH (the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy) of the USSR, is rewarded with sign "Honorable Radio Operator of the USSR".  He is a member of the Expert Council of the Highest Certification Commission of Ukraine.
